Georgia enjoyed a great 2002 season in which they went a strong 13-1, were in the national title hunt and blew out the Florida St. Seminoles in the Sugar Bowl. That was then, this is now. The Bulldogs only bring back a grand total of 10 starters from last year´s team and that is going to mean some early season struggling. Nothing is worse that having an inexperienced squad and having to open up the season on the road vs. a rival. That is the situation for Mark Richt. Only three starters return on their offense and virtually the entire offensive line is new. What makes things worse for Georgia here is the fact that they are favored on the road in this contest vs. a team that they beat by only three points a year ago. Georgia has won eight of their last 10 season openers but the bad news is that nine of those games were at home. I think it will be a different story this year.
Clemson has been chomping at the bit for this contest. Georgia ruined their opener a year ago and this Clemson team would love to return the favor. The Tigers bring back seven starters on offense including quarterback Charlie Whitehurst. He will be throwing to experienced wideouts Kevin Youngblood and Derrick Hamilton. I think the Tigers will be able to move the ball in this contest and will maintain the upper hand. Motivation is on their side and so too will the crowd. I like Clemson opening up the season as a home dog in this spot.
